He went to her grave on the first heavy snowfall of winter, lay down in the cold grass, held the silver heart to his chest through the blizzard, and did not come back. The mountain winter had already taken Charlotte and the next winter took Charles. And there they stayed — sealed inside the story, inside the cold, inside each other.
This piece holds him the same way.
He is authentic antique German bisque, circa 1850s — pale, still, cast in a single unjointed piece the way all the early ones were. I set him inside a large oval pendant with an ornate engraved silver bezel and a deep dark background, so that he stands suspended — preserved, enclosed, permanent. Kept. The pendant hangs from a long strand of white pearl beads interrupted by clusters of black faceted glass disc beads with rhinestone spacers. The contrast is intentional, the balance of it feels just right.
