Charlotte pinned real flowers at her throat that night, the imported kind you don't see in winter, and she was not about to bury them under her mother's heavy blanket for a fifteen-mile ride. Her mother held it out anyway, the way mothers do. Charlotte waved it off, the way daughters do. The night was clear. The blooms looked perfect. That was the whole of her reasoning.

Charles noticed the frost first, gathering pale on his own brow as the sleigh runners hissed over the snow. He asked if she was warm enough. She told him, in a voice gone soft and strange, that she was growing warmer now. He believed her, the way you believe the last thing someone tells you before you understand what it cost them to say it.

When they arrived at the ball, he reached for her hand, but she did not move. She sat there like something already finished, still dressed for spring in the middle of winter, flowers frozen at her throat exactly as pretty as when she'd pinned them. Nothing about her had wilted. That was the terrible part.

I built her a small garden to keep. A tiny arched frame holds the antique bisque figure surrounded by velvet rose petals and greenery, blooms that will never go any further than this, caught the same way she was. She hangs from a shimmering silver ribbon, soft with age at the edges, finished with a faceted rhinestone drop swinging free at the clasp in back. Nothing here fades further. That was always the point.
