He found her grave on the first heavy snowfall of winter. Lay down beside her in the cold grass and held the heart to his chest through the blizzard. When it stilled, so did he. Charlotte and Charles, laid to rest.

A century of quiet patina lives in his surface. I crowned him with a small dark top hat, because he was always the gentleman who showed up. A single antiqued bronze wing hangs at his side — one is enough; he only needed to go one direction. At his hip, a dark ornate heart locket, heavy and closed, the way his grief was. At his feet, a bronze filigree charm and a single pearl drop — the last thing of beauty he carried out of that winter.
He travels on an ivory silk sari ribbon, gathered and knotted, the kind that looks like it was torn from something that mattered.
